Casa Corvina

A fishing-net shop that started to smell of charcoal.

Until the nineties this building sold nets, floats and rope to the fishermen who still moored in Miragaia. When Rosa and Abel found it in 2013, the doors were shut and the old wooden counter was still inside.

Abel grew up in Afurada, across the river, watching his father grill fish in the street. Rosa learned to cook from her grandmother in Viana do Castelo. They opened Casa Corvina in March 2014 with eight tables and a handwritten menu.

The menu is still short on purpose. We buy fish in the morning at the Matosinhos market and decide what goes on the grill once we have seen it. When it runs out, it runs out.

The old shop counter is where we slice the bread now. The tiles at the entrance are the originals, from 1920, and they are the one thing we did not touch.

How we work

Market fish only
If the sea was rough and the boats stayed in, the day's board gets shorter. We would rather do that than serve frozen fish.
Cork-oak charcoal
The grill has been charcoal since day one. It takes a while to get going, which is why we open at 12:30 and not earlier.
Local wine
The list is small and mostly from the Douro and the Minho. Ask Abel, he knows the growers.

Come and see the room.
